Van She

at The Echo

Review by Tim Estrada

On our most fearsome fiesta, Halloween, The Goth inspired Van She spooked up a storm with shimmering splendor caught live by Tim Estrada at the Echo. These ambitious Aussies embrace their dedicated followers.  Although geared as the opening act upon their arrival, (at the Echo Park indie pop paradise the Echo, in Echo Park) these destiny driven darlings dazzled.  The garage like atmosphere further established the promise that Van She aspires to achieve.  Their willingness to create and customize an influence of new wave and jangle pop is quite profound for a decade dominated by synth fashioned Brits.

With that preference towards legions of 80s icons as the Psychedelic Furs, the Go Betweens, XTC, the Stone Roses and Big Country, no one would suspect such a stampede of arena rock could be echoed in a clustered club like the Echo. Already receiving heavy rotation around the US college circuit for the throbbing single" Kelly," the  Van She's swan song stood out as an indispensable closer with snippets of synth and lush guitar arrangements ala Oxford's finest Ride.  Cheers to Van She's show stopping showcase. As for the headliners, I jetted out once I realized I was standing the middle of Echo Park alone.  Sorry folks but I wouldn't even let my own mother stay alone in Echo Park past 10PM.  I wanted to live to trick or treat another day.
