The Strokes’ ‘First Impressions of Earth’ reminds me of a
college student’s term paper: ambitious, impassioned, and
incomplete. Songs like ‘Razorblade’ have that irresistibly cool
Strokes sound that every other band emulates, but I can’t help
thinking of Barry Manilow’s ‘Mandy’ every single time I hear the
chorus. ‘Ask Me Anything’ resulted in an unsuccessful attempt at
irony as Julian repeatedly babbles, “I have nothing to say.” ’15
Minutes’ has a slow ballad-like introduction that does not do
justice to the amazing second half of the song as it assaults
you with blinding guitars and Julian’s piercing vocals.
But overall, ‘First Impressions’ is a great album. The Strokes
do what they do best; they rock out with buzzing guitars and
intoxicating melodies on a majority of the songs. Highlights
include ‘You Only Love Once’ which is easily my favorite song on
the album, and ‘Heart In A Cage.’ They still deliver that hip
and careless New York disposition that undeniably defines The
Strokes, forcing me to forgive the band as they stumble through
new paths of creativity and maturity.
