Breaking into the Biz

Working as an extra or as SAG now calls it, Background Actor, is one of the easiest ways to get on the set. It can be a lot of fun, plus you get the opportunity to meet the people that can make you a star. If you can collect 3 SAG Extra vouchers (very easy to do for underground extreme types) you qualify to join the Screen Actors Guild and any reputable production company will at least pay you the non-union minimum, although for Punk, Goth and Raver types the base pay is frequently much higher. I've done a lot of background work and usually loved it. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do it these days, but I hope to get back to the set again soon (if for no other reason than to get some set pix for ya). It's totally a blast if you're on a great set with a couple hundred other freaks doing some concert or party scene.

Keep in mind though, there are some major drawbacks for the serious actor. While you have the opportunity to meet some of the Hollywood Powers-that-be, it makes it more difficult to be taken seriously as an actor with these same dudes once you are considered a mere extra or background actor. Also a lot of agents won't even consider taking on an actor that does background work.

If after weighing the pros and cons of background work, you decide to take the plunge, it is one of the easiest ways in the world to earn a few extra  bucks. You sit around the set, eat, smoke, eat, meet and visit with people you'd hang out with normally if it's a Punk, Goth or Rave scene being shot. Did I mention eat? The food is amazing and worth showing up for on it's own. The work usually consists of acting like you're hanging out at a club, concert or party--pretty tough, huh? And who knows you just might get picked out of the crowd to say a few lines, get a sweet contract and see your name as the credits roll!

See you on the set.
